Haze and West-Facing Sun: Blackout Curtains for Singapore Homes

By Prime Decor Furnishing

West-facing Singapore HDB living room with blackout curtains in late-afternoon sun

Singapore haze season runs about August to October. On the evening of 24 August 2026, NEA’s central 24-hour PSI peaked at 98, still under the unhealthy band at 101. Winds from the south and south-east were carrying smoke from fires in Kalimantan and southern Sumatra. Check haze.gov.sg or myENV for your side of the island.

What the PSI does not tell you is a west-facing HDB or condo at 4pm: windows shut, air-con on, glass still pouring heat and glare onto the sofa, cot, or laptop. That is a window-treatment job, not an air-purifier job.

Close the windows. Then deal with the glass.

Stay indoors when PSI is up. Once casements are closed, heat and glare still come through the pane. West glass is a radiator from early afternoon. Blackout or a dense night curtain on the west wall stops the sun cooking the room you just sealed. Haze also scatters light; sheers alone will not save a TV wall or a WFH desk. A purifier handles particles that already entered. It does nothing for solar load on the glass.

West-facing rooms first

West and south-west bedrooms and living rooms take the beating. Use a proper night layer: blackout or tight dim-out, full height, overlapping at the centre. East rooms often need only a lighter day fabric plus night for privacy. North rooms are usually the gentlest. Confirm sun path on site, not from the floor plan.

Day and night on one window

Most west living rooms still want daylight on a moderate-PSI afternoon. Two fabrics on one track: a day curtain (sheer or light-filter) left drawn, and a night/blackout layer you pull when the sun swings round, PSI is ugly, or someone sleeps at 3pm. Bedrooms, shift workers, and young kids: real blackout on those windows; keep the day layer for the living room. Indoor curtains and blinds: three-year warranty. Measured to the reveal, plaster lumps, and AC ledge.

What blackout is not

Blackout is a fabric rating, not a darkroom. Short panels, no overlap, or a gap at the track and the room still glows. A blackout roller can work on one bedroom casement; it does not give a day layer. We do not publish a fake “from $X” grid. WhatsApp +65 9735 8050 for a measured visit.

Balconies are a different product

Indoor curtains will not survive a west balcony. ZipBlind outdoor zip blinds run fabric in side zip tracks. Ziptrak® is another brand’s trademark, not our product. Five-year warranty on the ZipBlind system. Somfy optional. HDB/condo often needs MCST or HDB sign-off before drill day.

This week

  1. Check west glass at 3–5pm, not 10am.
  2. Close windows when PSI is up. Draw the night layer on west rooms.
  3. If you have no night layer, book a measurement. Do not hang a ready-made that gaps at the sides.
  4. BTO just collected keys: sheers first for privacy, blackout after renovation dust. Tell us the key-collection week.

FAQ

  • Blackout does not filter outdoor air. It stops heat and glare so a sealed AC room stays usable.
  • West-facing HDBs are usually worse from early afternoon. Confirm on site.
  • Do not put indoor rollers on a balcony. Use ZipBlind.
  • Custom indoor work is typically weeks from confirmation. We quote after measurement.
