PSLE Study Rooms: Curtains for Glare and Naps in Singapore
By Prime Decor Furnishing

Listening Comprehension is Tuesday, 15 September 2026. Written papers run Thursday 24 September through Wednesday 30 September. That timetable is from the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board, not a tuition centre. The real exam venue, for most households, is not the school hall. It is the dining table at 3pm.
Meteorological Service Singapore’s fortnightly advisory issued on 1 September 2026 put the first half of this month in the 33–35°C band on most days, with a few days above 35°C and nights often stuck above 27°C. Below-average rainfall, with brief showers possible in the second week. A Primary 6 at that table is squinting into a washed-out worksheet while the air-con fights the glass.
This is not another haze article. We already wrote how blackout behaves when west sun and PSI stack. This one is about revision: glare on paper, naps between papers, and a sibling who still has to sleep at 8pm in the same flat.
The dining table is a west window with homework on it
Most HDB and condo “study rooms” are a corner of the living or dining area. The window that lights the sofa at 10am is the same window that blows out a science MCQ at 4pm.
Glare is the first leak. Afternoon sun on laminated worksheets, a tablet, or a laptop camera for online tuition. A sheer alone scatters the light. It does not stop it.
Heat is the second. You can close the casement. The pane still radiates. MSS has the island in a hot, dry fortnight. A child who has already sat English in the morning does not need a second heat load from the glass during the afternoon paper-prep.
Noise and corridor eyes are the third, and they are why families leave sheers drawn all day. That is fine for privacy. It is not enough for a paper that starts at 8:15am the next morning if the same child cannot darken a bedroom at 8pm.
Two rooms, two jobs
The revision desk (usually dining or a spare bedroom used as a study) needs a day layer you can leave drawn so the room stays civil, plus a denser layer you pull when the sun swings round. That is a day-night curtain spec: sheer or light-filter for daytime, blackout or dim-out on the same coordinated track for the ugly hours.
The sleep room is not optional in exam week. Written papers start at 08:15. Listening is a Tuesday morning. Marking exercise is 12–14 October, which is also when many families finally exhale — and when younger siblings still have school. Put a real blackout on the child’s bedroom, full height, overlapping at the centre, returning to the wall if the track allows. A 4cm gap at an HDB bulkhead is why “we bought blackout” still looks like 6am at 9pm.
Shift-working parents in the same bedroom follow the same rule. The exam calendar does not care that someone came off a night shift.
What to specify, without a shopping list of brands
We do not publish ranking tables. We also do not name other workshops.
- Living/dining study: day-night pair on one track. Leave the day cloth drawn. Pull the night cloth from about 3pm on west and south-west glass, earlier if the block next door does not shade you.
- Bedroom: blackout night curtain as the default. A light sheer in front if you still want morning glow on non-exam days.
- Single casement over a desk: a blackout roller or a combi (zebra) blind is a clean answer when you do not need drape. Specify child-safe hardware in a child’s room — that is a chain and cord issue, not this article’s job.
- Confirm the sun path on site. “Study facing the courtyard” on a floor plan is not the same as 4pm after the neighbouring tower is in the way.
Indoor curtains and blinds carry a three-year warranty. We measure to the actual reveal, plaster lumps, and AC ledge. Ready-made panels that stop short of the sill are why glare still wins.
If the study is the living room and the opening is a balcony
Indoor cloth will not survive that opening. Outdoor zip blinds run fabric in side zip tracks so wind is less likely to flap the cloth. Ziptrak® is a registered trademark of another brand. It is not a Prime Decor Furnishing product. We supply ZipBlind outdoor zip blinds, including Somfy-motorised options, with a five-year warranty on the zip-blind system.
HDB and condo balcony work often needs the managing agent or MCST (and sometimes HDB) to look at drawings before drill day. Start that before anyone promises a quiet, shaded dining table by Listening Comprehension. A zip blind will not land in two days.
BTO and new keys: do not wait for the night before English
If you collected keys this year and the renovation is still dust, you can stage day sheers for privacy now and add the night layer once paint and flooring are done. See BTO curtains. Tell us the key-collection week so the two visits make sense.
We do not quote a fake “from $X” here. Every opening is measured.
What to do before 15 September
- Sit at the actual desk at 3–5pm this week, not on a Sunday morning. If you cannot read a worksheet without squinting, the day layer is not doing the job.
- Check the bedroom after lights-out. If the room still glows from the corridor or the opposite block, the night cloth is short, gapped, or the wrong density.
- Do not buy a ready-made panel the weekend before English Paper 1. A made-to-measure indoor job is typically measured in weeks from confirmation, longer if fabric is indented.
- WhatsApp +65 9735 8050 with the estate and which room is the desk. We will tell you honestly if a visit still helps this exam season or whether you should run with what you have and plan the proper pair after results.
Prime Decor Furnishing measures, makes, and installs for HDB, BTO, and condo homes islandwide. The Straits Times featured us for transparent curtain pricing. Browse curtains and blinds, or WhatsApp +65 9735 8050 for a free home measurement.
FAQ
Will curtains make a child score better? No. They take glare and heat off the desk and make an early night possible. That is the job.
Is a sheer enough for a dining-table study? Usually not after lunch, especially on west and south-west glass. Keep the sheer for privacy. Pull the night layer for glare.
Can I darken only the bedroom and leave the living room? You can. Many families do. If the desk is in the living room, the living window still needs a denser layer for afternoon papers.
Do I need outdoor zip blinds for PSLE? Only if the study faces a balcony opening. Indoor curtains do not belong there. Use ZipBlind, not an indoor roller, and budget time for MCST or HDB paperwork.
Can you install before 15 Sep? Unlikely for a custom pair. WhatsApp the estate and room; we will say if a visit still helps this season or after results.
How fast can you install before 24 September? We will not promise a date from a photo. WhatsApp the rooms and the estate. If the calendar is already tight, we say so.
