Unhealthy PSI Stay-Indoors Week: Blackout Curtains for Singapore Homes

Late September into early October 2026 brought Singapore’s first unhealthy haze band since October 2023. Per The Straits Times (30 Sep 2026, citing NEA), the 24-hour PSI reached about 164 in the central region on 29 Sep, and readings across all regions returned to the moderate band by about 11pm on 30 Sep. NEA was still forecasting moderate to low-unhealthy risk into early October, with dry conditions over southern Sumatra and south-western Kalimantan, south-east or south winds, and a clear note that showers do not remove the smoke risk. Check haze.gov.sg or the myENV app for your side of the island before you plan the day.

This brief is not another west-sun heat piece. Our live haze and west-facing sun post covered moderate PSI (~98 in late August) cooking a west glass room. This one is narrower: when PSI is unhealthy and NEA says reduce outdoor activity, the whole household stays sealed indoors — and the cloth job is daytime blackout for naps, shift sleep, and WFH glare in a closed AC flat, plus a usable day layer in the living room.

Unhealthy PSI means sealed windows — then the glass still works overtime

When the 24-hour PSI sits in the unhealthy band (101–200), NEA advises healthy people to reduce prolonged or strenuous outdoor activity, and vulnerable groups to minimise or avoid it. In practice that is a stay-indoors week: casements shut, air-con on, purifier running if you have one.

Once the flat is sealed, two problems still come through the pane:

  • Daytime light for sleepers — toddlers’ naps, night-shift recovery, or anyone who needs a dark room at 2pm while the rest of the block is awake.
  • Glare on screens and desks — WFH and revision at the dining table in a closed living room, with grey outdoor light still washing the glass.

An air purifier handles particles that already entered. It does nothing for light load on the glass. That is a window-treatment job.

Bedroom blackout for daytime naps and shift sleep

A denser night layer — full-height blackout on a proper track — is what makes a sealed bedroom usable when outdoor haze keeps everyone home in daylight hours.

What usually fails in Singapore BTO and HDB bedrooms:

  • Short panels that leave a strip of glass open at the sides.
  • Tracks that stop short of returns under the bulkhead or beside the AC ledge.
  • Day sheers alone at “nap time” — fine for soft afternoon light, useless when someone needs real darkness while the opposite block is still bright.

Pull the night cloth fully across for naps and shift sleep. Overlaps and returns matter more than how dark the fabric looks in a swatch photo. Indoor curtains and blinds carry a three-year warranty.

Living rooms still need a usable day layer

Stay-indoors week does not mean living in a cave from breakfast to dinner. The living or dining room still has to work for WFH, meals, and kids’ quiet play with the windows shut.

A day-night curtain pair on a dual track (or coordinated track set) earns its keep here:

  1. Day layer (sheer or light cloth) — softens grey outdoor glare and neighbour views so the sealed room stays civil without boxing everyone in.
  2. Night layer (denser / blackout cloth) — draws across when someone needs a dark corner for a nap on the sofa, when glare hits the laptop wall, or when evening privacy matters after a long indoor day.

You do not need a haze-themed living room. You need cloth that closes. Warm taupe or cream over aluminium casements still reads as a normal Singapore flat — style is secondary to a track that actually seals the opening.

What to check in an HDB or BTO flat this week

Singapore openings rarely match a brochure:

  • Aluminium casements — measure reveals, not floor-plan widths.
  • Bulkhead and AC ledge — tracks often sit under the bulkhead; depth and returns need a site measure.
  • Which rooms get used for sleep by day — master bedroom, kids’ room, or a living-room nap corner; put the denser night layer where daytime darkness is actually required.
  • WFH desk orientation — if the dining table faces the glass, a day layer that cuts glare matters as much as blackout in the bedroom.

If you just collected keys, stage the rooms you will actually live in this week first. See BTO curtains for sequencing — do not order off a floor-plan screenshot while the PSI is bouncing.

Soft plan while haze risk continues into early October

  1. Check haze.gov.sg or myENV for today’s 24-hour PSI and hourly PM2.5 before outdoor plans — NEA still flagged moderate to low-unhealthy risk with SE/S winds even when showers are on the chart.
  2. Walk the bedroom at midday with windows shut. Note where light leaks along the glass edge and above the AC ledge — that is your nap / shift-sleep gap.
  3. Walk the living room at the WFH desk. Decide whether a day layer alone softens glare, or whether you also need a night pull for daytime darkness.
  4. WhatsApp +65 9735 8050 for a free on-site measure when the openings are clear enough for tracks.
  5. Balcony is a separate brief. Indoor cloth stays indoors. Outdoor zip blinds belong only when you need to seal a balcony opening against outdoor smoke and dust.

ZipBlind only if the balcony is the smoke path

Indoor rollers and drapes are not balcony weather gear. If your living room opens to a balcony and outdoor smoke or dust is the reason you keep that door shut on unhealthy-PSI days, outdoor zip blinds run fabric in side zip tracks so wind is less likely to flap the cloth — and a sealed balcony opening helps keep the living room closed without staring at a bare railing.

Ziptrak® is a registered trademark of another brand. It is not a Prime Decor Furnishing product. We supply ZipBlind outdoor zip blinds, including Somfy-motorised options, with a five-year warranty on the zip-blind system.

HDB balcony work often needs managing agent or MCST (and sometimes HDB) eyes on drawings before drill day. Start that paperwork as its own lead time — do not fold it into a bedroom blackout order the week the PSI spikes.

Soft honesty on timing and quotes

Haze weeks are for staying well indoors, not for guessing curtain lengths from a phone photo. We measure on site. We do not lock a price from a WhatsApp shot of an empty shell. Lead times depend on fabric, track type, and how many rooms you stage together.

FAQ

What PSI facts are this post based on? Soft-cited from The Straits Times (30 Sep 2026, NEA figures): central 24-hour PSI about 164 on 29 Sep; all regions back to moderate by about 11pm on 30 Sep; first unhealthy haze band since October 2023. Always re-check haze.gov.sg or myENV for today’s reading.

Does NEA still expect haze risk into early October 2026? As of the 30 Sep advisory reported by ST, NEA forecast moderate to low-unhealthy PSI, with dry conditions over southern Sumatra and south-western Kalimantan and prevailing south-east or south winds — showers do not remove the smoke risk.

Is this the same as your haze and west-sun post? No. That live piece covers west-facing heat and glare at moderate PSI. This one is stay-indoors week when PSI is unhealthy: sealed flats, daytime blackout for naps/shift sleep, and a usable day layer for living-room WFH.

Do blackout curtains filter outdoor haze? No. Blackout does not filter outdoor air. It stops light so a sealed AC room stays usable for naps, shift sleep, and screen work.

Do I need new curtains just because PSI spiked? Only if bedrooms still leak daylight when someone needs to sleep by day, or the living room cannot cut glare with windows shut. The spike is a useful planning window; the job is sealed-flat comfort — not décor.

Can you quote from my phone photo this week? No. Free on-site measurement. WhatsApp +65 9735 8050.

Is ZipBlind the same as Ziptrak®? No. Ziptrak® is a competitor trademark. We sell ZipBlind — and only when a balcony opening needs sealing against outdoor smoke, dust, or weather.

What warranties do you carry? Three years on indoor curtains and blinds. Five years on the ZipBlind outdoor zip-blind system.
